NM Board of Pharmacy awarded Harold Rogers 2014 Grant

Recently the Board of Pharmacy was awarded the BJA Harold Rogers PMP Grant for use in enhancing the New Mexico Prescription Monitoring Program.

This award will be used for a variety of enhancements and innovative initiatives with the goal of making the PMP of greater value and ease of use for Prescribers and Pharmacists.

Recently the Board of Pharmacy was awarded the BJA 2014 Harold Rogers PMP Grant for use in enhancing the New Mexico Prescription Monitoring Program.

This award will be used for a variety of enhancements and innovative initiatives with the goal of making the PMP of greater value and ease of use for Prescribers and Pharmacists.

Below is some information regarding these planned enhancements:

Expansion of Pro-Active Alerts

This NM PMP web application enhancement will expand Unsolicited Reporting to match grant requirement thresholds as well as to include specific (the pharmacy manager, commonly called the “Pharmacist in Charge”) dispenser accounts.

This enhancement will also provide a new “Unsolicited Alert” when the results of a NM PMP Request meet the same threshold used for Unsolicited Reporting (currently the threshold is any patients receiving any scheduled prescriptions from > 5 prescribers and filled at > 5 different pharmacies within a 6 month period)

Enhanced Dispenser Reporting

These enhancements will provide for the ability to accept prescription data in the most current reporting format from dispensers, leveraging additional data elements available in this format and enacting an enhanced dispenser reporting compliance monitoring mechanism.

Specifically this means requiring dispensers to report in the ASAP 4.2 format, support for the DEA Suffix so that we can separate those practitioners who prescribe under a master DEA number, and compliance monitoring upgrades to support the expected change to daily reporting requirement.

Integration of NARxCHECK as an optional PMP Request Report format

The PMP will also implement the inclusion of the NARxCHECK report as an optional request report format within the PMP itself; New Mexico will be the first state to do this!

NARxCHECK provides a propriety “NARxCHECK” score as well as graphical representations of prescription history. We are hoping that this will help in users’ ability to quickly digest the sometimes dense PMP information on their patients.

Additionally, NM PMP web portal users will be able to set the NARxCHECK format as their default format for PMP request reports

Development and Implementation of “Practitioner Report Cards”

Statistics of practitioner prescribing behavior (along with NM PMP usage rates) will be correlated and reported to the practitioner on a quarterly basis.

This will not only show prescription volumes, but also “High Risk Prescribing Criteria” that have already been determined in conjunction with the NM DOH.

These statistics will also be shown in comparison to other Practitioners in the same specialty field.
